Hand Sanitizer Recipe

You may have noticed that bottles and bottles of hand sanitizer have been flying off the shelves during the early months of 2020. If your local stores are out, don’t fear! You can make your own hand sanitizer at home with rubbing alcohol or vodka.

“Hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol can also reduce the number of germs on your hands to a lesser extent, but CDC said products that are alcohol-free or have a lower percentage of alcohol are not as effective” (Ebbs, 2020).

The good news is that the recipe is a relatively cheap one (all ingredients cost about $15 in total) and it’s simple! It shouldn’t take you longer than 5 minutes to put everything together. Cheap and easy handmade sanitizer!

Ingredients

Hand Sanitizer Ingredients
2/3 cup of Isopropyl Alcohol (91+% alcohol content)
1/3 cup of Aloe Vera Gel
5 drops Anti-Bacterial Essential Oil (Tea Tree Oil, Eucalyptus Oil, Citronella Oil, Lemon Oil, Peppermint Oil)
Optional: 5 drops of Vitamin E Oil (for softening the skin)

Recipe

  1. Mix together the Isopropyl Alcohol and Aloe Vera Gel with a whisk.
  2. Add in your choice of Essential Oil and Vitamin E Oil (if you’re using it). Whisk together.

That’s it! Simple and easy! Pour your hand sanitizer into a bottle or container for storage and make sure to label it so you don’t forget what it is. This recipe makes approximately one cup of sanitizer which should last you and your family a good while.
